Tending to the work of displaying nature’s beauty can sometimes encompass the entire time clock in the Land of the Midnight Sun. From this picture, you would never know that a 300 foot long stretch of the most beautiful rock gardens in the world lie sleeping under the snow just down the hill from this home. Amelia – she pots up hundreds of dahlias, she waters and weeds the rock gardens, she climbs high and low through the greenhouse, she scouts out the best prices on plants and soil about town, she lugs rocks along with John. John – he gives up his car space in the garage to ‘winter over’ more plants, he trims wind-torn spruce trees into ostrich ballerina’s or a post for a birdhouse because he just can’t bear to dig ‘em up and toss their lives away. Together they host tours of the garden for special groups and NARGS rock garden members. Only snippets of the gardens are shown here, we expect you to haul yourself up to Anchorage if you want to see the real deal! |
